Alberta’s Free Fishing Weekend in July

Fish for free  in Alberta on July 9 and 10!

If you are looking for a fun, inexpensive summer activity, go fishing during the coming free fishing weekend. On July 9 and 10, Albertans and visitors can fish without a licence in any public water body that has an open fishing season, outside of a national park

Alberta’s sportfishing regulations still apply during free fishing weekends. Pick up a free copy of the 2011 Alberta Guide to Sportfishing Regulations wherever licences are sold or at any Fish and Wildlife office. Refer to the guide for information about angling locations, requirements and tips, fish handling techniques and fish species identification. The guide is also available at www.albertaregulations.ca or on the My Wild Alberta website at www.mywildalberta.com.

Those who want to continue fishing after the free fishing weekend must purchase a Wildlife Identification Number (WIN) card and an Alberta sportfishing licence available through licence issuers or the online licence application website, AlbertaRELM, at www.albertarelm.com. Alberta residents ages 16 to 64 are required to have a sportfishing licence. Canadian residents from outside Alberta (16 and older) and non-residents from outside Canada (16 and older) are also required to have a sportfishing licence.

Alberta has two free fishing weekends each year: the Family Day weekend and during the summer to coincide with National Fishing Week. The next Family Day free fishing weekend will take place February 18 to 20, 2012.
