Gear Review: Can-Am Commander 1000XT

If you want a powerful and capable side-by-side for your moose, elk or deer hunting season — check out the 2012 Can-Am Commander 1000XT.

Powered by one of the best engines in the business — the 976cc Rotax V-Twin — which produces more than 80 horsepower, this machine is ready to tackle on the vast open plains, the rugged mountains, and everything in between.

The Commander 1000 features 11 inches of ground clearance, has a 1,500-pound towing capacity, can hold 1,200 pounds of cargo and has a 37.8 litre (10 gallon) fuel tank. The XT package adds a 4,00-pound WARN winch, 14-inch wheels, mudgaurds, analog/digital gauges, custom steering wheel, Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires and more. It’s available in four colours, including the camo seen here. Plus, you can even add accessories like a stereo and a Garmin GPS system.

Add to this a stellar suspension and two- or four-wheel drive, and you’ve got a side-by-side worth challenging the status quo for.
