Alpine hunting, whether for sheep, goats or even a high country mule deer buck, has its own unique challenges and rewards. One of these challenges is finding your quarry, and that requires a good pair of binoculars. But for those of us who have sought out these special animals and habitats, we are also confronted with the issue of keeping the weight of our gear to an absolute minimum.

Over the years, I have been through a whole series of compact binoculars and what these lightweight, compact binoculars have taught me is that in order to avoid eyestrain they must have top-quality optics as well.

The Kowa BD 25 Series compact binoculars offer Phase and C3 prism coatings, which offer 99 per cent or higher reflectance, fully multi-coated layers on all glass surfaces, waterproof integrity with the use of dry nitrogen gas, o-rings and twist-up eyecups, and a compact size of only 4.4 by 4.1 by 1.5 inches and a weight of only 11.3 ounces. They come in two models: the 8x25DCF and the 10x25DCF. Both have great glass and are very comfortable to use with excellent contrast and a bright image.

Model BD25 – 10×25 GR MSRP: $300
