Not what you’re looking for? Find more articles about fishing for saltwater fish!   I consider myself a history fanatic, so when my wife said we’re going on a well-deserved five day family getaway to San Francisco, Calif., I quickly booked a guided tour to see the legendary and historic maximum security prison, Alcatraz. The tour of the prison and Alcatraz Island was everything I could have hoped for. Many of the country’s most dangerous criminals were incarcerated on the island during Alcatraz’s 29-year reign as the most feared prison in the country. And many areas of the prison still … Read more »

While hunting, turkeys don’t always do what we anticipate. To boost your chances of connecting, it’s valuable to learn how to make the most of any situation. All or nothing decoy tactics refers to two strategies I employ under a particular set of scenarios. 1. ALL: Attract every bird in a roost tree just after first light with a mega spread, and if they hang up or move off, find another way to get within range. 2. NOTHING: Cat-and-mouse-type calling strategies if your morning hunt fails, yet you have suitable terrain to intercept a responsive tom without the use of … Read more »

Not what you’re looking for? Find more articles about fishing for trout or char! Trout fishing isn’t reserved for the fly fishermen The early morning sun was heating up the surface water of the lake, causing the cool air to lift off the water and create a misty fog. It was a warm morning and through the mist cutthroat trout were rising all around my float tube, eager to take my tiny imitation fly. There was rarely a cast with the fly rod that a cutthroat didn’t raise to my offering and it was one of the most memorable mornings … Read more »

Not what you’re looking for? Find more articles on hunting gear! Accurate shooting begins with a properly tuned bow Today’s compound bows are intricate, high-tech pieces of equipment. Depending on whether a bow is a dual cam, a cam-and-a-half or a single-cam bow, each will be tuned just a little bit differently. That said, in general, all compound bows have interdependent parts and, as such, they must be tuned so that those components work in synch. At the same time, it’s important to acknowledge that anything that needs tuning can, and will, eventually go out of tune. Strings stretch and … Read more »

Not what you’re looking for? Find more articles on hunting birds! Pick the right call for the right time Hunting waterfowl is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. I am anything but a dedicated waterfowler and my collection of waterfowl hunting gear is pretty meager. I’ve managed to acquire a few decent shotguns over the years but other than that, I’ve got a couple dozen floating mallard decoys, some decent waterproof clothing and some high-quality calls. And, truthfully, that’s all a person really needs to enjoy this great heritage. While I’ve got buddies with hundreds of decoys and … Read more »

Not what you’re looking for? Find more articles about fishing for pike or walleye! I slowly motored to the middle of the calm bay and cut the engine to start fishing. I launched my big, chartreuse spoon towards the cattail-lined shore and had only turned the crank four times when I saw a wake appear behind my lure. There was no doubt when the fish hit, as my rod was nearly jerked out of my hands. The line peeled off the reel as if the drag wasn’t set with any resistance. The fact of the matter was the drag was … Read more »
