ON THE LINE: Start The Year Off Right

Well here we go! The season is getting so close and if you are like me, you will spend the next couple of weeks stocking up, checking and scouting for the upcoming season.

This is the most exciting time of the year, no matter what you are into. All the companies are bringing out their new products and you might be asking, “Is it worth it?”

I come from the golf industry and they estimate that every five years, if you don’t have the newest products, you are losing out on great technology. Things I would look at the most are lures for fishing. This area seems to be the place where innovation would change the most, year-to-year. A new rod or reel – well, only if you are in the spending mood. For more information on the product you’re considering, some of the best places to look are reviews on the product. The US is awesome in this aspect, as they get to test out the new products before us. Don’t always look at the awards these products win. What I have found is yes, awards are good, but remember that a select few people, who may or may not share the same values as you, vote on these products.

Take the time to check your equipment. Lots of companies offer cleaning supplies for your reel. Take the time and do this to keep your equipment in top shape. The last thing you want is a failure when you are out on the water.

Next, if you are spin-reel fishing, update your line. If you use mono, this can be done very inexpensively. For fly fishing, it’s probably not needed unless something really peaks your interest.

A lot of companies have great sales to kick off the start of the season. Take advantage and stock up – make sure you have what you need to get through the year.

And last and not least, get your license. The money goes to good causes that keep us fishing in the areas we have grown to love.

Until next time, keep your rod tip up.
