May 22, 2014, marked the grand opening day of the second Cabela’s store in Edmonton, Alta. Edmonton is currently the only city in Canada to have two Cabela’s locations.

Cabela’s staff estimated about 2,o00 customers lined up to get into the store on opening morning, but this is about 1,000 less than the crowd that gathered for the grand opening of the first Edmonton location.

Instead of a traditional ribbon cutting to open the store, Cabela’s employee Josh Luedtke competed and won for the chance to fire an arrow at the ribbon. It took two arrows to break the clay plate holding up the ribbon, but once it smashed and the store was opened, the crowd and gathered staff members cheered. Josh is the first Canadian to open a Canadian Cabela’s store. He’s been an archer since he was eight years old, said his mom, Kathryn, who was there with Josh’s grandfather and father to watch him shoot.

“This is a fantastic opening,” said John Tramburg, vice president of Cabela’s Canada. “We heard there was potential for another store on the north end of Edmonton, and this validates it. We’ve been open for 20 minutes and people are still pouring in through the doors.”

Cabela’s will be opening more locations in Canada, including Barry, Ont., and Nanaimo, BC, and they have plans to open a new store in Moncton, NB, in 2015. Tramburg confirmed that Cabela’s is looking to open a store in Calgary, as well, if and when the right location comes up.
