Never Too Late For Fly Fishing

I felt the subtle tap of another fish on my fly and I instinctively set the hook. My fly rod bowed under the weight of the fish as I worked my fly line back onto my reel. The fish instantly came to the surface, trying to spit the hook. But I could see he was hooked well in the top of his mouth and I now had all my line back on my reel. Moments later, I landed the first whitefish of the day. We’re into December and the hunting season is all but over. With any luck, your freezers … Read more »

The Wrong Fish

It was a sunny but cold day during the second day of the Southern Alberta Walleye Tournament. We put together a middle-of-the-pack limit of walleye on day one, but the second day of any walleye tournament is always much tougher than the opener. The reason being, the lake or reservoir has been picked apart for three to four days of pre-fishing and the opening day of the tournament by some of the best anglers in the western provinces and northern US states. This makes the closing day a tough day to land big fish. However, we were confident with three … Read more »

A Pike Encounter

When you mention float tubes, your mind might quickly turn to fly fishing and trout. It’s one of the biggest misconceptions about floats tubes. I make it a point to spend as much time as I can every summer landing fish from the comforts of my float tube. However, I fish for more than trout. Every year my float tube and I spend a healthy amount of time on lakes and reservoirs fishing weed beds for pike, perch and even walleye. And on my first outing this year, I had a heart-stopping experience with a hungry pike. I was fishing … Read more »

Fishing Boreal Lakes

Not what you’re looking for? Find more articles about fishing for pike or walleye! Introduction – our day on the water Trolling loud, brightly coloured baits in late July was responsible for catching many large pike and walleye in a small, seemingly unimpressive, double-portage lake. My brother Alexei and I were enjoying a day (off the clock) from guiding at Canada North Lodge in north-western Ontario’s Sunset County. In the lake we planned to fish that day we traditionally jig shallow cabbage beds for walleye, but today the fish were scattered and likely suspended deeper somewhere. We needed to cover … Read more »

The Quest For Manitoba Walleye

Not what you’re looking for? Find more articles about fishing for pike or walleye! My anticipation was palpable, as I stood with spinning gear in hand, slowly raising, pausing and dropping the jig and minnow set up. I’d thump the bottom a couple of times, raise a foot, pause, jiggle, slowly lower. Repeat. Until suddenly it felt like something hit the jig with a hammer and the fight was on! I set the hook and watched the rod bend, the fish pulling in that typical walleye head-shake way until an emerald green shadow appeared and moments later the fish was … Read more »

Fish For Early-Season Pike

Not what you’re looking for? Find more articles about fishing for pike or walleye! I slowly motored to the middle of the calm bay and cut the engine to start fishing. I launched my big, chartreuse spoon towards the cattail-lined shore and had only turned the crank four times when I saw a wake appear behind my lure. There was no doubt when the fish hit, as my rod was nearly jerked out of my hands. The line peeled off the reel as if the drag wasn’t set with any resistance. The fact of the matter was the drag was … Read more »
