Handloading Question

This is a question for Mark Hoffman regarding his article on reloading in the Jan/Feb 2008 issue (“How To 101,” page 16). It is about using a rod to measure the OVL of a cartridge. It worked OK for my 300 and my 6.5, but it did not work for my .25-06. I have a Browning A-Bolt, using Nosler 110 Accubonds. The Nosler book said maximum OVL is 3.250, I reloaded at 3.225. The rod measuring said it should be 3.063, that is a huge difference. Any ideas what went wrong? Hope to hear from you.

Moly Coat Question

My brother passed along the Jan/Feb 2007 issue of Sportsman, and I was pleased to find more than one helpful article in it. It appears to be a publication that I would like to subscribe to myself.

Your recent article on gun cleaning was particularly helpful (“How to 101,” Jan/Feb 2007). Thanks for the primer! Could you please comment on the use of ammunition with moly-coated bullets? I understand that the moly coats the barrel and affects ballistic performance. What does it do for cleaning requirements and difficulty? Are there any websites that objectively state the pros and cons of moly coated ammo? Thanks in advance.

Reloading Query

I have some reloading manuals and they show many sizes can be loaded for the 300 WSM. Then I read that basically 150 to 180 grain are the main sizes for this calibre. Can you enlighten me? I would like to try some smaller and some larger grains. I have loaded 180s and they shoot well.

What is the best scope for sheep hunting?

Print
PDF

I subscribe to Western Sportsman Magazine and thoroughly enjoy the magazine, especially the articles on mountain sheep hunting. I have been planning for a sheep hunt for a couple of years and have a few questions in regarding to choosing optics for the trip. I have purchased a new Browning A-Bolt.270 WSM Mountain Ti model weighing in at 5-1/2 pounds and want a lightweight scope to match the gun. I tend to be a little biased when it comes to scopes and usually stick to Leupold. What else is available on the market and what would you recommend for a scope? Secondly, what is preferred when glassing, binoculars or spotting scope? I have seen numerous shows and read articles and the split seems to be 50/50 when using the above-mentioned equipment. Any information or thoughts would be greatly appreciated and I would like to thank you, in advance, for your time in responding to my questions. -CT
