I have some reloading manuals and they show many sizes can be loaded for the 300 WSM. Then I read that basically 150 to 180 grain are the main sizes for this calibre. Can you enlighten me? I would like to try some smaller and some larger grains. I have loaded 180s and they shoot well.

Syd Young You have selected a fine calibre that has a very wide range of potential .30 calibre bullets that can be reloaded for this cartridge. While the 150 to 180-grain bullets will meet most needs for hunting in Western Canada, the .300 WSM is very capable of much more. You can load 110 to 130-grain bullets for varmints with velocities that exceed 3,600 fps with the 110-grain bullet. Or you can, as I did for a recent bear hunt in Russia, load some 220-grain Hornady RN bullets that can push velocities to 2,800 fps. I used 760 powder and the groups that I attained in my Tikka T3 were outstanding with this bullet.  They consistently averaged a half-inch at 100 yards and with this load I dropped a very large eight-foot Eurasian brown bear with one shot. So yes, experiment with other loads, but remember in doing so every rifle responds differently to specific loads. In other words, don’t expect the full spectrum of bullets to shoot as well as specific bullets and loads that your rifle happens to like. —Eds
