Western Sportsman Blog

Western Sportsman editor David Webb's blog on hunting, fishing and your outdoor world.

There is a love-hate relationship between outdoorsmen and ATVs. And even those that love them - sometimes hate them.

But really we're talking about the operators not the machines, right? After all - ATVs are not only fun, but useful, and sometimes essential. I am heading to an ATV access cabin in June to do some fishing, and the only conceivable way my buddies and I can get our gear in is via

Don't close the window! This is not another doom and gloom report, believe me, I'm just as sick of them as you are.

No - this is about how lucky we are to have recession-proof hobbies.

What am I talking about? Well, imagine for a moment that during this economic downturn, your hobby was sailing. You might be in trouble - at the very least, there's a good chance your significant other might not

In Your Backyard

We all want more anglers and hunters - as long as they're not in my "backyard."

It is the battle cry of every fish and game club out there: “How can we attract more people to hunting and fishing?” And next to perhaps the gun registry and habitat loss, hunter participation is the most talked about subject at outdoors-related gatherings.
But I’m going to ask the tough question: Do you really want

For us, it's the last trade show of the spring show season: the Fishin' Hole Show at Mayfield Trade Centre in Edmonton.

Are you coming? It's free to get in, and parking's much better than the gong show at Northlands Park, so why not?

OK - I'm going to let you in on a secret that we haven't advertised... everyone who buys a three-year Western Sportsman subscription will received a FREE hunting

The grand opening of the new Bass Pro Shops store in Balzac, just north of Calgary, is set for April 7.

Are you going? Bass Pro is apparently expecting 25,000 people to show up on day one.

For anyone heading to the store during opening week, you're sure to see some familiar faces and names on the seminar stage. Brad Fenson and T.J. Schwanky, to name two, will be holding a series of seminars, and

It is most certainly trade show season -- because Western Sportsman is off to yet another trade show this weekend, March 12 to 15. It's the biggest of all the Western Canadian hunting and fishing shows... the Edmonton Boat & Sportsman's Show, at Northlands Park.

We're especially excited about this year's show, as we've doubled our booth space and we'll have tons of stuff on sale: DVDs, Hats,

Saskatoon readers: head to the Saskatoon Sports & Leisure Show March 5 to 8. Western Sportsman magazine will be there, in Booth 60. Renew your subscription at a special show rate, buy merchandise - DVDs, hats, cookbooks - or just have a chat with me (David Webb) or the magazine's publisher, Mark. It should be a really fun show, I hope to see you

Attention Western Sportsman readers in southern Alberta: come down to Stampede Park in Calgary on from February 12 to 15 and take in the Boat & Sportsman's Show at Roudup Centre.

It's four days of hunting, fishing, boating and generally hanging out and talking 'bout the outdoors. Some of Western Sportsman's best-known contributors will be putting on seminars too, so don't miss those.
