I get a lot of requests from aspiring and professional photographers to "buy" stock submissions... that is, a photographer will e-mail me a single or a few images, and ask if Western Sportsman would like to purchase them. We usually don't operate that way — — we generally buy articles and photo packages as one, or request specific images from photographers.

So, for most of us, the holidays are over... but don't despair... the hunting and fishing trade show season kicks off very soon. It's the perfect time to buy all the gear you'll need to take full advantage of the spring, summer and fall.

Dangerous Shots

I read about this hunter in Alberta last year who "accidentally" shot at a fellow hunter -- he mistook him for a moose.

Thankfully, the shot missed. The perpetrator was shocked at how this happened -- and, when I read the article, he seemed to believe such a mistake is easier than he once thought.

I don't buy it. We all know that we NEVER pull the trigger unless we're 100 per cent sure of our target. Not 99.99999 per cent. One-hundred. That means a positive ident [...]

I just returned from a trip there this week, and I am blown away by the quality of this fishery. Huge bull trout and fiesty westslope cutthroat trout all in a gorgeous, easily accesible location? Can't be beaten!

Sure, the Classified Waters licence is pricey for non-BC residents, and whether or not you agree with this system, I can tell you that $20 per day, or $15 per year f [...]

Duck Shooters & Hunting Suspensions?

I would like to put a question out there into cyberspace...

Following the now-infamous incident of the duck shooters who uploaded their crimes against nature onto YouTube (CLICK HERE to read the latest), I have to wonder somewhat about the punishment...

OK, $16,000 in total fines -- I get that. Forfeiture of rifles and camcorders -- that makes sense. Public humiliation? That was thrown in for free.

Big Fish on the Fraser River

Wow! If you've never gone sturgeon fishing on the Fraser River, you are missing out!

I've been three times now, and it never gets old. It is a truly unique fishery and a unique experience to battle, land, study and photograph these amazing creatures.

Some of these fish are more than 100 years old, and have been caught at lengths of 11 feet or more. Even more interesting is that these fish are relatively unchanged in 650 million years. Literally, dinosaurs.

We've all heard about them - the infamous duck shooters who posted a YouTube video of themselves blasting away at ducklings and ducks on the water with a .22 - laughing as they did it.

A fairly interesting news day today - and no, I'm not talking about that Obama vs. the Cambridge police thing...

I read today that Canada, more specifically Great Slave Lake, may be home to a entirely unique species of cisco - just discovered the other day. They've dubbed it Coregonus googelii - the "googely eyed cisco."

The fish was caught in Great Slave Lake last fall, and is now under seririous scrutiny while biologists attempt to determine if this is a newly [...]

Cougar Attacks

This is an interesting news story I grabbed off CTV's website. Any comments?

Conservation officers branded the cougars "killer cats" because they appear to have no fear of human beings.

The first cougar was shot after being spotted on July 3 near a campground in the B.C. interior town.

Then on July 10, a 16-month old cougar was shot by a local resident after it was seen observing children swimming in the Tulameen River.
