Season's Tips

I think the biggest hurdle facing any new hunter is access -- where do you hunt? Once that's figured out, the rest tends to fall into place. A good mentor or hunting buddy becomes invaluable here.
Practice is also key. This means range shooting, whether yoy shoot bullets or arrows. Bow hunters have a leg up here though, as they (we) can head into the hunt areas and shoot at targets (stumps) all we want. It's great real-world practice.
The best advice I've gotten thus far in my bow hunting career (my very short bow hunting career) is to hunt grouse. Not only does it put some birds in the pot, but provides the best practice you can get -- real world shooting for small, flighty game. A deer practically seems easy after you hit a grouse -- OK, not really. But it's still good practice.
Other than that, shoot shoot shoot. But don't be like me and use a home-made cheapo cardboard box-stuffed-with-stuff target for your archery. You just end up ruining your vanes when eventually the arrow passes halfway through the box.
That's my last tip.
Have fun out there.
PS: Anyone have any grouse hot spots they feel like giving up? ;-)

I agree that it's always challenging to decide on where to go hunting, hence, we have thought it appropriate to post this invitation to all WESTERN SPORTSMAN READERS.
