The winter outdoors can be a dangerous place, especially for the sportsman. Thin ice, loose snow and exposure sickness — these are but a few of the perils we face when the weather turns cold. We may not be able to remove all the dangers from our path, but we can certainly be prepared for them — and with that, we can safely enjoy the great white outdoors.

Well — how was I to know the darned lake was sitting straddling the Continental Divide and creeks were running out of both ends? True, it was new country to me and in hindsight my hunting partner but I should have checked the topographic map that I had of the area around 15-km-long, Finlayson Lake in the central Yukon, a lot closer I suppose. I knew the water was running out at the opposite end of the lake and therefore thought that the creek we were on should be running into the lake. I was wrong. At any rate, soon we had travelled more than five kilometres away from out intended destination.
