On three separate deer hunts, in three different Canadian provinces, in the same season, I was rewarded with exciting encounters with whitetail bucks across our beautiful country! Like many Canadian hunters, I wait for deer season all year long. I have become so passionate about pursuing whitetails across Canada that I simply can’t let a season end with a single tag. I decided to find a way to keep hunting, and on a budget. With careful planning and research, I managed to weave hunting opportunities for myself across three provinces for the following year. This is my 2012 quest for … Read more »

Not what you’re looking for? Find more articles on hunting birds!   Wild turkey hunting in western Canadian provinces is a relatively new addition in our national outdoor line up. These western birds, largely the elusive and much sought after Merriam’s sub-species of wild turkey, provide western residents with a unique opportunity to pursue them, as they do not exist in eastern Canada. A successful Merriam’s hunt early in the season means you are in striking range of achieving the Canadian Wild Turkey Hunting Slam, which currently has less than 10 lonely registered entries.   My introduction to western turkey … Read more »

There is much wisdom in the statement, “beware of the man with only one rifle, because he likely knows how to use it.” It’s humbling sometimes to see the differences between subsistence and recreational hunters. Something I have noticed, spending time with both groups, is the mentality surrounding hunting firearms. November brings about a season of change for whitetails, as well as a chance to give thanks On Nov. 11, 2011, I had attended the Remembrance Day ceremonies in the morning and was enjoying a late lunch amongst the veterans at my local Legion. The whitetail rut was starting to heat up and I had been hunting a good 5×5 buck that had given me the slip several times during the archery season. But things were changing. He’d been pestering a small group of does for the last few … Read more »

Not what you’re looking for? Find more articles on hunting gear! Every once in a while, I discover a product designed for Canadian users. It is noteworthy for that reason alone, but when it offers an array of features that can be of use to those of us who live north of the border, it is a product worth detailing. The Magellan eXplorist 610 Canada certainly fits that mould. It offers high sensitivity GPS reception with easy-to-read mapping for precise, unparalleled outdoor navigation. It allows the user to find his/her way using maps or a series of different compass screens, … Read more »

Not what you’re looking for? Find more news and events stories! The Conservative government ended a seven-year waiver on gun license renewal fees in May, in an effort to collect about $18 million annually from firearms owners. As part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the new changes to the firearms regulations restored the $60 license fee for non-restricted weapons. The Conservatives brought in a two-year waiver on the fees in May 2006 and had extended it every year until this year. “The government will not renew the current fee waiver in the current climate of fiscal restraint,” said a Canada … Read more »
